This research aims to investigate metaphors in a suspended ode from the ancient Arabic poetry.First, it presents a brief preamble about the author of the ode, Labid bin Rabi'ah, and then provides and explanation for the concept of metaphors among critics. After that, the analysis of the ode begins to highlight the metaphors, by dividing the poem into several pieces, and after analyzing them, the researcher tries to join these pieces and link them together through highlighting their organic unity. In this study, the inductive and analytical method was followed.
The study aims to compare between two investigations of the poetry of the Abbasid poet Khaled al-Katib, the first by Dr. Younis al-Samarrai, which was issued by Dar al-Resala in Baghdad in 1981 AD. While the second by the French orientalist Albert Arazi, and it was issued by the Maisonneure etlarose house in Paris in 1990 AD. This comparison attempts to highlight the efforts of each of the investigators, showing strong and weak points , after careful reading of the two investigations based on the inductive approach, careful analysis, considering the most important observations, and then comparing them with the aim to answer the following questions: What prompted the Orientalist Arazi to re-investigate the poetry collection (Diwan)? What has Arazi added? What are the shortcomings, if any, in Al-Samarrai's investigation that prompted Arazi to re-investigate the poetry collection (Diwan)? The nature of the study required dividing the research into sections, a preface in which the researcher explained his method and the aim of the study, an introduction in which the importance of the investigation and the efforts of orientalists in investigating the Arab and Islamic heritage are explored. After that the two investigators as well as Khaled al-Katib are introduced in addition to the indication of their most important characteristics, their prominent observations, and a comparison of the two investigations in order to answer the research questions. Finally, a summary is presented showing the most important results that the researcher concluded.
